Karl Urban Teases Epic Upgrade in ‘Mortal Kombat II’: “Everything Is Leveled Up” Like ‘The Road Warrior’

LOS ANGELES May 2, 2026 – As “Mortal Kombat II” gears up for its theatrical release on May 8, 2026, star Karl Urban is hyping the sequel as a massive step forward from the 2021 original — comparing it directly to the leap from the 1979 cult classic Mad Max to its 1981 blockbuster follow-up The Road Warrior.

In a new interview with Variety, the actor, who plays the cocky Hollywood action star Johnny Cage, didn’t hold back on the film’s ambitions.

“Everything in ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is leveled up: the production value, the cinematography, the fights. It’s all dialed right up,” Urban said, drawing the parallel to George Miller’s groundbreaking Mad Max sequel that transformed a low-budget Aussie indie into a high-octane global phenomenon.

Urban, best known for roles in The Boys, Star Trek, and The Lord of the Rings, also opened up about the intense physical demands of bringing Johnny Cage to life — including performing his own splits for the character’s signature “Nutcracker” finishing move.

“The challenge of rising to the physical level that was required to play Johnny Cage was immense,” he added. “I’m very grateful for the team I had around me. I just thoroughly enjoyed working with everybody and making it. Super proud of this movie.”

The highly anticipated sequel, directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by New Line Cinema, promises even bigger fights, more video-game-accurate fatalities, and a star-studded cast that includes returning favorites and fresh faces from the Mortal Kombat universe.

With its world premiere already held at the TCL Chinese Theatre on April 27, “Mortal Kombat II” is set to hit theaters and IMAX across North America on May 8, 2026, and internationally starting May 6.

Fans have been buzzing since the first trailer dropped last year, with Urban’s Johnny Cage already stealing the spotlight for his deadpan humor and over-the-top fight choreography.
