LOS ANGELES April 28, 2026 – Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish has defended her outspoken political views in a new cover story for Elle magazine’s May 2026 issue, addressing backlash over her comments at the 2026 Grammy Awards and her criticism of wealth inequality.

During her acceptance speech for Song of the Year at the Grammys, Eilish — wearing an “ICE Out” pin — said, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” and ended with “f*ck ICE,” prompting both support and criticism.

In the Elle interview, the singer explained her approach to using her platform:

“I was raised like this. When you have this insane platform that you can use to advocate for people, but you’re not advocating for people because you don’t want to be controversial? Why is it controversial to step in when someone’s getting bullied and try to stop it? Yeah, you’re probably gonna have to deal with some problems, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.”

Eilish has also spoken out against billionaires hoarding wealth. In November 2025 at the Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards, she directly challenged attendees including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, asking, “If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?” She has similarly criticized figures like Elon Musk on social media.

The 24-year-old artist has backed her words with action, donating $11.5 million from her recent tour revenue to charities focused on food inequality and the climate crisis.

She also addressed rumors of a falling out with her brother and longtime collaborator Finneas, calling their relationship normal for siblings — full of arguments but quick to reconcile.

The Elle cover story coincides with the release of her concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) and teases that her fourth studio album is more than halfway complete.

The full interview is available in Elle’s May 2026 issue.
